Joker Spinoff Starring Jared Leto Heads To Development

It’s no surprise that Jared Leto‘s Joker in Suicide Squad was one of the most interesting takes on the character. It wasn’t like the comic books or the dark and grungy Joker. And that is one thing you have to respect in David Ayer’s film. But it also wasn’t a well-received character.
That being said, he is a part of the DCEU now. And for those who have been dying to know if he would get his own film, well, the studio has answered that question. New reports are saying WB is putting a Joker movie into development with Leto starring and executive producing. More on the story below.
Per Variety, a Joker movie is under development that would allow the character to cause mischief and mayhem. While plot details are unknown, the report says that WB wants to build a Suicide Squad universe and expand upon those characters. Hey, at least Killer Croc will be able to do something this time around. That is, if he gets his own movie.
But it looks like that may be true. Recently, the studio hired Cathy Yan to direct the Harley Quinn movie. Christina Hodson’s Birds of Prey script will be reformatted and turned into the Harley Quinn spinoff. Of course, there are other films based on the two characters that are currently under development. The untitled Joker and Harley spinoff movie, Gotham City Sirens, and Suicide Squad 2. There is a chance that they could merge the two films together. But we will just have to wait and see.
The announcement does come on the heels of Todd Phillips’ darker and grittier origins take on the Joker. But his Joker movie will operate under a different banner, one that allows other actors to play different versions of the character. According to previous reports, this version will be a hard-boiled crime drama and more reminiscent of Taxi Driver. Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to play that Joker.
So let’s turn our attention back to Leto’s Joker. We don’t know when the film will start production. In fact, this just sounds like another DCEU title that will gestate for quite a while. Among the other films that have had difficulty getting off the ground are The Flash (or Flashpoint or whatever its called), The Batman, the aforementioned Joker and Harley untitled spinoff, Suicide Squad 2, and remember how there was going to be a Cyborg movie? Whatever happened to that?
