Henry Cavill Says He Hasn’t Given Up Playing Superman Again
  |  @   |

It wasn’t quite clear where Henry Cavill‘s stood on playing Superman again after it was widely rumored that he walked away from a cameo appearance in Shazam! and that he would no longer be playing the character. Though many had assumed the actor would no longer play the Man of Steel, nothing was actually confirmed. There had been reports that Warner Bros. was exploring rebooting the DC Extended Universe by turning their attention to Supergirl. But Cavill also posted an Instagram video of himself wearing a Kryptonian lift team shirt while slowly raising a Superman toy up to the frame, all with that Superman theme playing in the background. As confusing as it was, things remained relatively quiet. Until now.

In a new interview, Cavill says that the Man of Steel’s cape is “still in his closet,” and that he has a lot to give to the role, and that there is a lot of justice that needs to be done still. More on the report below.

Speaking to Men’s Journal (via Collider), Cavill had this to say about the status of his tenure as Superman:

“The cape is in the closet. It’s still mine”¦I’ve not given up the role. There’s a lot I have to give for Superman yet. A lot of storytelling to do. A lot of real, true depths to the honesty of the character I want to get into. I want to reflect the comic books. That’s important to me. There’s a lot of justice to be done for Superman. The status is: You’ll see.”

The optimistic side of me sees this as a good thing because it sounds like he still genuinely wants to play Superman, and that he still has x amount of films left to play the character on his contract. Not only that, he has a vision for how Superman should be portrayed and that when a film with him as the character gets made, it will be something that reflects the comics and does the character justice.

But that other part of me sees this as just another PR answer anytime he is asked a Superman question during an interview.

Still, I believe, like Ben Affleck as Batman, Cavill never really got a chance to shine as Superman because Warner Bros. was simply in a rush to try to replicate the success of Marvel Studios’ shared universe by releasing films with no concern about the quality. Though Cavill was fine in Man of Steel, lazy writing and a convolution in storytelling really showed in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

So I will look at the bright side of things, and see that Cavill still wants to play Superman somewhere down the line. Let’s just hope his commitments to Netflix’s The Witcher series doesn’t interfere with him putting on the big S shield once more.
