The upcoming Transformers spinoff Bumblebee promises to be an exciting adventure in the same vein as some of the great Amblin films of the 1980s. Starring Hailee Steinfeld, the film sees one of the bravest Autobots trying to outrun two Decepticon seekers, named Shatter and Dropkick.
Now, just ahead of its big San Diego Comic-Con debut, Paramount has dropped a new image from the film, one that introduces the two Decepticons. Check it out below.
The new image debuted on EW, where director Travis Knight talked a little bit about the film and its newest villains, Shatter and Dropkick.
First, Shatter will be voiced by Mission: Impossible – Fallout star Angela Bassett. She will take the form of a cherry-red Plymouth Satellite. Meanwhile, Dropkick will be voiced by The Leftovers star Justin Theroux, who takes the form of an AMC Javelin. But those two aren’t the only villains in the film.
Then there is that mysterious airborne villain. While Knight wouldn’t reveal the Decepticon’s identity or who it will be voiced by, he did say that there would only be three of them. Which is a bit refreshing considering how many villains there were in the first four live-action Transformers films.
Here’s Knight talking about keeping things lean:
“When the cast is too big, and you have a finite amount of time, there’s only so much you can do to create an investment in them. This is a more personal, intimate, and character-driven story, so it felt right to keep the villain plot relatively simple and contained. If you keep things lean, you can add a lot of other stuff on top of it that makes it more enjoyable.”
So these Decepticons will have more personality than their predecessors. Again, that is a bit of a relief. However, with all of the secrecy surrounding this airborne villain, there is some speculation as to who it could be. Namely, a certain treacherous Decepticon with a very familiar color-scheme. He does look an awful a lot like Starscream. But we will have to wait and see if it is him.
We are learning that these Decepticon seekers are on the hunt for Bumblebee. But it’s not really clear why they are after him. Perhaps we will learn more about the film at SDCC. Maybe we will finally find out who that flying Decepticon is.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
Bumblebee also stars John Cena. It opens in theaters on December 21, 2018.
