SDCC 2018: Frances McDormand To Voice God In ‘Good Omens’; Behind The Scenes Video Released
  |  @   |

During Amazon’s Prime Showcase panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 their adaptation of Good Omens, the book by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, was on hand.

At one point during the show’s time on stage a disembodied voice rang out, speaking to Gaiman, who created the series and is the showrunner. The voice belonged to God, a character on the show. And who was voicing God? That would be two-time Academy Award winner Frances McDormand (Fargo, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri).

Continue below to see what she had to say and to check out a Good Omens behind the scenes video as well as a new poster.

God began by saying “Do not show any footage, we have talked about this” to Gaiman. He responded with worry, saying “If i don’t show them something, there will be riots. There will be blood on the floor, possibly mine.”

It was at this point that God allowed him to share the behind the scenes video below. And after that video finished playing, God ended the chat with “You’ve earned a place in Heaven. I’ll have my people talk to your people.”

But how did the Amazon series score someone like McDormand to voice God? It was all a bit of luck, really. Gaiman explained that they knew it had to be a woman and that they wanted it to be an American voice, so they were talking about potential American actresses. At this point, out of nowhere, McDormand e-mailed Gaiman hoping to use his house in Scotland despite the fact that the two had never actually met.

Gaiman of course was happy to let her use it, but also took the chance opportunity to see if she might be interested in joining Good Omens. As Gaiman put it “That’s how Frances got cast: blackmail.”

The show stars David Tennant and Michael Sheen as representatives of God and Satan, Heaven and Hell, good and evil. Sheen plays an angel named Aziraphale, while Tennant plays a demon named Crowley. Both have lived on Earth since the dawn of creation, and with the end of the world on the horizon, neither is fond of the idea of leaving.

Here’s an official description of Good Omens:

The end of the world is coming, which means a fussy Angel and a loose-living Demon who’ve become overly fond of life on Earth are forced to form an unlikely alliance to stop Armageddon. But they have lost the Antichrist, an 11-year-old boy unaware he’s meant to bring upon the end of days, forcing them to embark on an adventure to find him and save the world before it’s too late.

Also starring is Jon Hamm as the archangel Gabriel, who leads Heaven’s forces. Anna Maxwell Martin as Beelzebub, who counters Gabriel as the leader of Hell’s forces. Mireille Enos plays one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, War. Nick Offerman will play the father of a child named Warlock and the U.S. Ambassador. Finally David Morrissey will play Captain Vincent, the captain of a cruise ship who encounters Atlantis.
