‘The New Mutants’ Reshoots Haven’t Happened Yet; Could Still Aim For An R-Rating
  |  @   |

The one X-Men film that seems to have fallen by the wayside is The New Mutants, a spinoff that centers on a different group of mutants who are forced to come to grips with their mutant powers while being held in a secret government facility. The film was supposed to hit theaters earlier this year before being pushed back to February 2019 and then to August 2019. The reasons for those new dates was to give director Josh Boone some extra time for reshoots. However, to push back the film almost two years after the film was originally scheduled to be released seems strange. And to say that the reason for that push was to get some reshoots in seems even odder.

But that appears to be the case. The reshoots are pushing the film’s release date to August of next year. But not because the reshoots are happening now. It’s because the reshoots haven’t happened yet. More on the report below.

In an exclusive interview with Collider, Dark Phoenix producer Simon Kinberg spoke about how the pending reshoots could influence the film’s rating. Here’s what he told the site:

“It’s the kind of movie that could go R, or it could be a hard PG-13. As I was saying before in terms of subgenres or the genre, it is obviously teased as a horror film, and most horror films these days are R-rated, but it stars a very young cast, so we’ll see. It really is what the movie wants to be. The studio is open to either rating”¦ Traditionally, superhero movies are PG-13 other than Logan and the Deadpool movies, and generally, horror films are R-rated, so we’ll see where this one falls. It is a very scary, edgy movie.”

Again, if we go back to Deadpool, Logan, and to a certain extent Deadpool 2, these are all highly successful R-rated superhero films that steered away from the traditional superhero flicks that are designed to appeal to a wider audience. And using that horror angle opens the door to having more superhero films blended with horror themes. We’ve already seen Fox try out different genres with their X-Men films, and they are open to using genres they haven’t used before. So it should be interesting to see if Fox truly embraces the horror aspect of The New Mutants and scare the bejesus out of audiences and fans of the title.

The New Mutants stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Alice Braga, Charlie Heaton, and Henry Zaga. It opens in theaters on August 2, 2019.
