‘Venom’ Sequel To Be Written By Kelly Marcel; Ruben Fleischer Will Not Return To Direct
  |  @   |

When a film is able to amass an $855 million worldwide box office, you can be sure that the studio behind it will be interested in investing in a sequel. And that is what is happening with Venom. Though the film was panned by critics, Venom 2 is in the works.

Kelly Marcel, who co-wrote the script for the first film with Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, will be back to pen the sequel. However, director Ruben Fleischer won’t be back since he is busy working on Zombieland 2. More on the report below.

Variety says that all of the main players from the previous film will be back. Tom Hardy, who played the former destitute journalist Eddie Brock and his symbiotic parasite Venom, will presumably fight Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson), a convicted serial killer who becomes Carnage when the Venom symbiote produces a spawn with a thirst for blood. Michelle Williams will also reprise her role as Anne Weying. Will there be another symbiote kiss with a human? We will just have to wait and see.

Now, the first Venom was fun at times, but it was just a discombobulated mess. At least to some. Remember, the film went on to gross $855 million worldwide, which is quite impressive for a film that has been panned by critics. At the same time, you can’t blame the studio for wanting to pursue a sequel after its success. So now it’s a matter of can it get any worse, or can it get any better.

Based on Marcel’s screenwriting credits, it all depends on how you view the Fifty Shades film trilogy. Those weren’t exactly the best screenplays. Not that the source material gave her a lot to work with. But, for the most part, I found the films to be soap opera enjoyable. So, could that be the same for the Venom sequel? We will just have to wait and see.

No word yet on who Sony is looking at to replace Fleischer. We will reportedly see Venom 2 sometime in 2020.
