‘Detective Pikachu’ Trailer: Justice Smith and Ryan Reynolds Need A Pokémon Hero
  |  @   |

Warner Bros. and Legendary could have gone the traditional route with their first live-action Pokémon movie by adapting the story of the boy on a journey to collect all Pokémon species. But they didn’t. Instead, they are adapting one of the franchise’s many spinoffs, Detective Pikachu.

In the film adaptation, we see Justice Smith play Tim Goodman, a human, whose father has suddenly gone missing. But when a wise-cracking Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) comes in to help him, they uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe. Check out the newest trailer for the film below.

The first teaser gave us a glimpse of the world where humans and Pokémon co-exist. But in this one, we get to see that not only are these Pokémon living together with humans, they are also a part of daily life. Some help with traffic. Others aid in medical procedures. Then there are the Pokémon battles.

Here, Tim seems to be able to communicate with Pikachu and is the only who is able to understand him. While they are able to converse, other people just hear Pikachu just say his name. Just don’t expect Tim to be catching them all as he and Pikachu will be busy trying to solve a mystery.

Of course, the comparisons to Deadpool will be out there. And it seems fitting that Ryan Reynolds plays the part of the adorable yet offensive Рat least on a family friendly level Рyellow Pok̩mon.

Here is the official synopsis for Detective Pikachu:

The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City””a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world””they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

Ken Watanabe and Kathryn Newton also star.

Directed by Rob Letterman, who uses a script written by Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch, Detective Pikachu opens in theaters on May 10, 2019.
