Sony Pictures Entertainment has released a new trailer for Brightburn, a superhero horror flick.

The movie comes from producer James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Slither), and offers a twisted take on the superhero tale. It tells a Superman-like story of a young boy with super powers from another planet who ends up on Earth. But as he discovers his special gifts, he passes up the opportunity to do good with them and instead opts for very dark deeds.

SYNOPSIS:

What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister?

With Brightburn, the visionary filmmaker of Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither presents a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror.

Starring in Brightburn is Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, Matt Jones, and Meredith Hagner. It’s directed by David Yarovesky (The Hive). The screenplay was penned by James Gunn’s brother Brian Gunn and his cousin Mark Gunn, who previously co-wrote the screenplay for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

Producing with James Gunn is Kenneth Huang, while Dan Clifton, Simon Hatt, Nic Crawley, Mark Gunn, and Brian Gunn executive produce.

The movie comes as James Gunn figures out his next directing project. After being fired from directing Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, he jumped over to the DC universe to work on the script for Suicide Squad 2. Since that time he’s also entered into negotiations to direct, so if all goes well it looks like that will be next, but we won’t know for sure until ink meets paper.

Brightburn is set to be released in theaters on May 24th.
