‘Little Women’ Trailer: Greta Gerwig’s Adaptation Of Louisa May Alcott’s Classic For A New Age
  |  @   |

Louisa May Alcott‘s 1868 novel Little Women is a timeless coming-of-age novel that continues to remain relevant, even to this day. As such, the classic is the subject of another cinematic adaptation.

This time it comes from Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig, who brings the novel to life with Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Eliza Scanlen, and Florence Pugh as the March sisters, all of whom are “determined to live life on her own terms.” Check out the full trailer below.

Little Women reunites Gerwig with her Lady Bird stars Ronan and Timothée Chalamet. But its star power grew thanks in part to the additions of Watson and additional cast including Laura Dern, Meryl Streep, Bob Odenkirk, and Chris Cooper.

Like the adaptations that came before it, the film will focus on the March Sisters as they enter the world of adulthood. Previous reports say that Gerwig’s telling will be different when compared to previous film adaptations because her “screenplay jumps back and forth in time, focusing more on themes than narrative.”

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on her own terms — is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.>

It’s a bit hard to see if that statement will hold true based on a trailer alone, but if it is, it is an exciting premise. But the film will focus on the themes of a woman’s familial duty and cultivating their own identity, as well as themes of love, duty, and sacrifice. Something of which Gerwig is familiar with given her previous directing efforts.

Little Women opens in theaters on December 25, 2019.
