Catherine Hardwicke‘s Twilight started the craze in 2008 with teens everywhere taking sides as either Team Edward or Team Jacob. Based on the books by Stephenie Meyer, young Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) was the envy of every girl, to have the heart of sparkly vampire, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and abs-olutely hunky Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner).

It seems that updating classics and age-old stories has become something of a fad. Only a few years ago the film Brothers Grimm was released, and three more films, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Snow White and the Huntsman, and Brothers Grimm: Snow White, are in the works. Not to mention all of the Disney cartoons that transform the original, often dark material into a colorful, sugar-coated, happy-ending cartoon with music whose soundtracks will sell hundreds of copies. Such movies rarely retain the core of the story they tell, and instead become an excuse for an entirely different kind of tale, one that takes away from the screenwriters the necessity of coming up with an entirely original plot, characters, and setting. This seems to be the case with Red Riding Hood, a film in which the story of a young girl and a wolf are used as an excuse to create a Twilight-esque tale in which a beautiful young woman must choose between two men. And the real shame is that this could have been a good movie, but instead got stuck with a terrible plot and an atrociously ridiculous setting.
The Official Twilight Convention is underway in Parsippany, NJ, this weekend and long-time Friend of Doom and Twilight fanatic, the lovely CrueChik is on the scene for Geeks of Doom.
The convention kicked off yesterday with guests like Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke and stars Gil Birmingham (Billy Black) and Edi Gathegi (the vampire Laurent) and members of the Wolf Pack from New Moon on hand for Q&A panels and autograph sessions.
Our reporter has called in a few times to let us know the happenings at the Con and sent the image here at right (click for larger, full view), which is a sign at the entrance to the Con (there’s another sign with an arrow pointing the other way for ‘Werewolves’ — CrueChik is on Team Edward, which is why we have such a bias pic. UPDATE: She’s not that bias – here’s the other pic). But, I think she’s living it up so much that she hasn’t had much time to write in her official report (we don’t blame her — we told her to party hardy!).
Since CrueChik is a Con newbie, she didn’t know about having to get everyone ‘early’ (like those of us learned at Comic-Con), so she wasn’t able to get into the Catherine Hardwicke Q&A (though, she was able to get into the autograph/photo session). MTV was there and noted that the Twilight director said her original vision for Robert Pattinson’s Edward Cullen was for the vampire to have “long, romantic hair.” They even went so far as to have Pattinson sit for 8 hours for hair extensions, but in the end, the actor said “No” to his new locks.
Remember that news recently about a Gothic-style makeover of the story of Little Red Riding Hood (Read: Tale Of “˜Little Red Riding Hood’ Set For A Dark Re-Telling)? Remember how it kind of had a cool vibe to it, like when we find out that Tim Burton is remaking something? Well, it appears that the movie may not be exactly what we might have hoped it would be.
It’s being reported that ousted Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke has been signed to helm this Red Riding Hood movie. New information about the project sets its title as The Girl With the Red Riding Hood, which will be the previously-mentioned Gothic-style re-envisioning that has some type of love triangle at the center of its story. Considering there’s only a few traditional characters that are typically used, this love triangle is a tad unsettling to think about.
