It was back in February that we found out that Jon Stewartwould be stepping down as host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show.
One of the top wishlist choices to replace him before Trevor Noah was given the job, was former correspondent John Oliver, but he of course had already left for a solid new gig at HBO, Last Week Tonight. But in an interesting turn of events, Stewart will actually be joining Oliver at HBO. It’s being reported that Stewart has signed an exclusive four-year production deal with the network.
I grew up in Brooklyn, New York, in a family that ritualistically watched ABC’s World News Tonight with Peter Jennings. I loved history and journalism, and ended up teaching high school level history. The calming, straight forward, no nonsense, nonpartisan news days have long since passed. With the advent and expansion of cable news, and the big money filing in, it’s incredibly difficult to find real, genuine news. As channels like Fox News went over-the-top conservative, stations like MSNBC had to hit back equally to the left. 16 years ago a phoenix rose over the garbage heap of the phony “real” news and gave us the greatest fake news show ever. 16 years after taking over for Craig Kilborn, Jon Stewart left The Daily Show last night, in perfect circumstances… as the Republicans were holding their first Presidential debates on Fox News.
It’s being reported that Jon Stewart has announced that he will be retiring as host of The Daily Show, a job he’s been doing since 1999 when he took over for the departed Craig Kilborn.
This news is just breaking so there’s pretty much no details at the moment. The news comes from those who attended a live taping of the show, and have shared their sadness at the announcement via social media.
Last year came word that Jon Stewart would be taking the summer off from his duties as the host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show to make a movie.
That movie is titled Rosewater, and it starsGael Garcia Bernal as a journalist who is held prisoner and interrogated for being a spy. It’s based on the true story of Maziar Bahari, and is of great importance to Stewart personally as one of the reasons Bahari was accused of being a spy is because he was a guest on The Daily Show.
Now the first trailer for Rosewater has been released, and you can watch it and read a full synopsis below.
