A trio of new stars are reportedly in negotiations to join Barry Sonnenfeld‘s Men in Black III, the third installment in the mega franchise that began in 1997.
According to sources, 30 Rock star and “single greatest actor of all time” Alec Baldwin, District 9 and The A-Team‘s Sharlto Copley, and Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time actress Gemma Arterton are all said to be in negotiations with Sony for roles in the new movie.
If all goes well, Baldwin will play the man who runs MiB back in 1969, the year that star Will Smith will be traveling back to in order to save a young K (Josh Brolin) from Yaz (Jemaine Clement), a nasty alien who’s been sent back in time Terminator style to take K out and ensure the destruction of Earth…if plot details we’ve heard are accurate, that is.
Arterton would be playing a secretary to Baldwin’s ’69 character, and it’s unclear whether her role is just that like Elizabeth Banks in the Spider-Man movies, or if there’s a little more to her. Copley is the most intriguing of the bunch, as he’d apparently be playing a “fast-talking Yoda-type alien.”
Though the movie seems to take place in the past for a significant chunk of time and Brolin is playing a younger version of Agent K, it does sound like Tommy Lee Jones will be making some sort of appearance. Hopefully it’s not brief — when dealing with time travel rules go out the window; you might as well have our K go back and hang out with his younger self. Just imagine the dry sarcasm overload we’d get!
While Baldwin would be playing the head of MiB in 1969, Emma Thompson was also recently cast to play the modern day head of the organization. No word on where this leaves Rip Torn and his Zed character. Perhaps he isn’t available for the movie and they got Thompson to take over for him. Perhaps this also means Baldwin is playing a younger Zed.
Men in Black III is looking at a May 25, 2012 release date.
