NBC Picks Up ‘Romancing The Stone’ For TV Adaptation; Shawn Levy Could Direct
  |  @   |

NBC has acquired the rights to adapt the 1984 Robert Zemeckis action–adventure romantic comedy, Romancing the Stone, into a TV series.

The deal with NBC comes from 20th Century Fox TV and Shawn Levy (director, Night of the Museum 1 & 2, Real Steel) and Marty Adelstein‘s (producer, Hanna, Prison Break) 21 Laps Entertainment and Adelstein Productions. Mark Friedman (writer, Home of the Brave, creator/writer/producer, The Forgotten) will write the adaptation, and Levy could step in to direct if no feature film projects (like Night of the Museum 3) become available to him.

The movie followed Kathleen Turner as a romance author who sets off to save her kidnapped sister in exchange for a treasure map, but, after almost being killed by someone else who wants the map, she is saved by an American bird exporter (Michael Douglas), and the duo end up on a dangerous quest to find the treasure, save her sister, and elude the many dangerous people out to find them.

As for the series, it will follow a “successful but unfulfilled woman who teams with a risk-taking adventurer to take on weekly missions while on a larger quest to find her missing brother.”

A remake of the movie has also been in the works for a while now with a director even being hired at one point, but just a few days ago it was reported that he had left the project, and it’s unclear when or if the movie will ever make it to your eyes.
