‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’ Could Alter The X-Men Timeline
  |  @   |

One of the basic principles of time travel is that if you change the past, you alter the future. So that principle couldn’t be more important to X-Men: Days Of Future Past, for what happens in that film could change the way we see X-Men: Apocalypse. And even though DOFP doesn’t come out until next month and Apocalypse doesn’t come out for another two years, director Bryan Singer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg are talking about how the upcoming sequel could have an effect on future X-Men films.

But does changing the past create an alternate universe? Not necessarily, as Singer and Kinberg explained to EW:

“[The movie] won’t necessarily create an alternate universe, but there may be some swapping things that I’m playing with,” admits Singer. Adds Kinberg, “From a visual standpoint it actually may be a bigger movie than Days of Future Past because there’ll be disaster movie imagery, like the title would imply.”

Interesting to think that a disaster theme could be the forefront of a superhero movie. We’ve seen heroes in movies save the innocent from all sorts of perilous disasters, but not one quite like Apocalypse.

Singer added:

“You won’t feel at the end of the movie that it set up Apocalypse. What it does is it sets up possibilities. But what we’ll discover in Apocalypse is that events in this movie made that happen.” He adds, “Apocalypse deals with ancient mutancy. What would humans have thought mutants were? What would mutants think humans were? You’re dealing with gods and things like that. And what if one survived and what if that found its way into our world?”

It is starting to feel like DOFP is giving off a Star Trek reboot vibe. While the filmmakers say that it won’t create an alternate timeline like J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek films, it will be able to give way for new characters and elements to be introduced into the film franchise. It should also answer some of those lingering (and annoying) questions we may have about the film’s chronology.

X-Men Days Of Future Past opens in theaters on May 23, 2014.

  1. My only question to the producers of the X-Men films is : When will you reboot the franchise so that you can undo the mess you’ve made of this amazing group of superheroes?!
