Spoilers for American Horror Story: Season 6

And so it has come to this. Five episodes of “My Roanoke Nightmare”, followed by four of “3 Days in Hell: Return to Roanoke” and for the third time in one season, American Horror Story is throwing a wrench in the spokes of our bike. The Miller family, Matt (Andre Holland) and Shelby (Lily Rabe) are dead. The actors that played them in the TV series, Dominic (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and Audrey (Sarah Paulson) are dead. Everyone is dead”¦ except for Lee Harris (Adina Porter), Matt’s sister. Lee somehow managed to survive the haunted North Carolina estate twice. She is far from being an innocent survivor. She admitted on camera; thought to be her last words, that she did in fact murder her ex-husband, and under possession, she murdered Monet (Angela Bassett) and tried to kill Audrey. Now she joins Lana Winters (Paulson) for a Barbara Walters style TV interview to discuss and reflect on the events she’s been through and witnessed.

We open on a My Roanoke Nightmare fan convention, before the start of “season 2.” We get a sense of how big a phenomenon the show became. We find out through YouTube videos that Lee is actually on trial for murder, and that the Polk kin are still out for vengeance. Thanks to a behind the scenes TV show, “Crack’d,” we watch as Lee was found not guilty of the Polk murders, or any of the other murders from 3 Days in Hell due to being exposed to the Polk’s drugs and tortures that made her insane. She then faces a trial for her ex-husband’s murder, and AGAIN she escaped prison. Flora, her daughter, admitted to witnessing the crime but said she was with her friend, Prescilla, the ghost girl from Roanoke. The jury ruled not guilty.

To the Lana Winters Special for a sit down interview with the now wealthy author, Lee Harris. And HOLY CRAP!!! I knew I recognized the name but it’s been so long… Lana Winters is from AHS: Asylum… and that’s why Lee took this interview over any other. Just as I cope with that realization, Lana surprises Lee with the info that Flora has been reported missing trying to trap her. Just then the Polk boy blasts his way onto the set with an assault weapon ready to get justice. He knocks out Lana, and is taken down by police before he can kill Lee.

OMG… this show doesn’t let you breathe. And we return with another disclaimer about the airing of a controversial episode of a show called Spirit Chasers. This is a Ghost Hunters type show where three young goofballs investigate the paranormal, and of course, they’re at the Roanoke house right in time for the Blood Moon. Right in the middle of their shoot, Lee shows up frantically searching for Flora, the last place she wants to be. Before you can grab a pillow, the ghosts of Roanoke attacks, the Chens, the sister nurses, Piggy Man, and The Butcher. With nothing else to lose, Lee stays and waits for Flora. We return and it’s morning, and it’s BREAKING NEWS from the house and Lee is in a standoff with police. In order to save her daughter and ensure her a long happy life, Lee makes one last bargain.

Final Thoughts: Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk are just the ballsiest showrunners on TV. They switched theme, genre, style, and substance throughout this season. Their devoted cast of insanely talented regulars played sometimes 2 – 3 characters, somehow crafting individual personalities for each and every one. Special shoutouts go to Adina Porter who was riveting as Lee, the somewhat shocking protagonist based on where the show started off. Sarah Paulson carried three roles perfectly, and Cuba Gooding Jr continues to be the Comeback King of 2016, between this and his role as OJ Simpson.

American Horror Story is a show that at best, shocks and captivates on a near minute by minute basis. It made a name for itself in its early seasons for daring to “go there” and push the boundaries while providing genuine “Holy Sh*t” moments. Sometimes the series got carried away and lost its flow throughout the season. I actually stopped watching Coven and Freakshow midway through. But Hotel brought me back and Roanoke just may have been their best overall season. There were too many times where I yelled at the TV, jumped, and just sat mouth agape at what I was watching. And with rumors of more connections between the seasons and characters, this just basically got me to rewatch the entire series from Murder House on.

Kudos to American Horror Story: Roanoke. You will be missed”¦ at least until the next Blood Moon.
