‘Blade Runner 2049’ Director Could Helm ‘Dune’ Reboot
  |  @   |

Denis Villeneuve has already proven himself to be well-versed in the sci-fi genre with the critically acclaimed Arrival. His next project sees him helming a more daring project, Blade Runner 2049, a sequel to Blade Runner.

And now it looks like he will be taking on yet another sci-fi film. There is word that the director is in early talks to helm a reboot of Dune following Legendary Pictures’ acquisition of the rights to author Frank Herbert‘s novel of the same name. Check out the full story below.

Variety says Villeneuve is one of the frontrunners to direct the Dune reboot. Legendary would not comment on the situation. When they purchased the rights they got the rights to films and TV-based projects on the sci-fi property. However, the production company doesn’t say how many spinoffs they will create. Legendary’s Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, and Cale Boyter will produce the various projects. Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert will act as executive producers. It’s not clear if Villeneuve will be involved with the TV projects.

David Lynch wrote and directed the 1984 film adaptation of Herbert’s novel of the same name. The film wasn’t successful at first, but has since developed a following. Many critics called it a mess and said it was very confusing. Because the film was a huge flop, grossing $30 million on a $40 million budget, any plans for a sequel were cancelled.

For those who may not be familiar with the film, Dune follows young nobleman Paul Atreides and his family as they come into conflict with rivaling families over a control of the extremely harsh desert planet Arrakis, also known as “Dune.”

Considering his track record, especially with sci-fi films, it would be hard to believe if Villeneuve didn’t get the job. Plus the director has spoken about how he wants to direct a Dune reboot. Here’s what he told Variety in an interview while promoting Arrival:

“I had been wanting to do sci-fi for a very long time. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a movie that really impressed me as a teenager. And also Blade Runner. And Close Encounters of the Third Kind is also one of my favorites. I’m always looking for sci-fi material, and it’s difficult to find original and strong material that’s not just about weaponry. A longstanding dream of mine is to adapt ‘Dune,’ but it’s a long process to get the rights, and I don’t think I will succeed. Also I would love to write something myself. I have two [sci-fi] projects right now that are in very [early] stages. It’s too early to talk about them.”

Remember, he is in early talks to direct, and even if he gets the chance to, he might be obligated to direct a sequel to Blade Runner 2049, if that is a hit. We’ll keep you posted on the development of the film.
