Laurence Fishburne Won’t Be Appearing In ‘Justice League’

Normally an ensemble superhero movie is the culmination of all the major characters’ stories that have appeared throughout the cinematic universe. Obviously the bigger superheroes will make it in, but some supporting characters make their way in as well. But one of the characters that won’t be appearing in Justice League, despite being in two DCEU films, is Perry White, confirmed by the actor who plays him, Laurence Fishburne.
The actor also confirmed a few things about the rivalry between DCEU and Marvel. Check out what he had to say below.
During the John Wick: Chapter 2 press junket, Fishburne spoke about how he would not be appearing in Zack Snyder‘s Justice League, and gave a rather good explanation why we would not be seeing Perry White:
“They asked me to come for a day, but I couldn’t work it out, schedule-wise. And really, what do you need the newspaperman in “Justice League” for? You want to see the Flash. You want to see Aquaman. You want to see Wonder Woman. You want to see the Lantern.”
Scheduling issues be damned, it’s not that Perry White is an insignificant character, it’s just that his role doesn’t amount to someone like a Nick Fury. I could imagine a small tease, but then again, audiences would be more focused on our heroes than what the Editor-In-Chief of the Daily Planet is doing.
During the same interview, Fishburne got candid with the rivalry between Marvel and DC, and bluntly acknowledged that Marvel is beating them easily in terms of popularity and success:
“We’ve been waiting 35 years for these [characters] to show up on the screen. What were they doing over there? Marvel has been kicking their ass. This is the comic-book geek in me, who has a collection of comic books. I’ve been waiting to see these people on-screen forever.”
He even got to talk about the Martha controversy that happened in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice:
“Look, I love what Zack Snyder does. Jesse Eisenberg, this little nebbishy guy, as Lex Luthor? For me, that’s a genius move. And the whole thing with Martha Kent and Martha Wayne? I don’t know, man, I must be sentimental but that’s some heartwarming [stuff] to me. So I don’t get it.”
Sounds like he isn’t too broken up about the Martha situation nor upset about not being cast in Justice League. That being said, we could see his reaction to the whole situation in Man of Steel 2 or even one of the spinoffs.
Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Jason Moama as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Henry Cavill as Superman. The film opens in theaters on November 17, 2017.
