Last week on This Is Us, it was the usual cryfest that was oh so bittersweet, as Randall (Sterling K. Brown) dreamed Jack and William (Milo Ventimiglia, Ron Cephas Jones) laughed about Randall antics, and William left instructions for the girls to throw his memorial. Although it was a “FUN”eral, it had us in a puddle of tears, as per usual. Kate told Toby (Chrissy Metz, Chris Sullivan) that Jack’s death was her fault, and we started to see what happened that night. Rebecca (Mandy Moore) left for her tour, but they were not on good terms. Kevin (Justin Hartley) got a redo on his opening night.

Spoilers below for the finale of This Is Us.

This Is Us 1.18 “Moonshadow” (Finale) review: The flashback is an even younger pre-Rebecca-and-Jack time. We see a younger Jack and a younger Rebecca getting set up for a first date. She’s explaining how great her budding singing career. He’s taking odd jobs to pay rent for his father’s attic, a father who puts him down at every turn. We find out he was in Vietnam. He tries to play poker to make money, and wins the first hand, but the head guy is pissed that he’s quitting. He’s excited, but then gets beat up in the alley. Jack realizes he’s more like his father than he thought. He plans on robbing the card guy’s bar. Rebecca gets rejected by Elektra records, so she agrees to the setup. The date is not with Jack. She bails and goes to sing just as Jack is going to rob the bar. “Moonshadow” is the song she was singing.

Jack (father of the teenage kids) goes to the bar where Rebecca is singing. Backstage, she is panicking and Ben (Sam Trammell) comforts her, but then tries to kiss her. She storms through the bar and Jack doesn’t see that. She calls and leaves a love message to him on the machine. He goes backstage and punches Ben, drunk. She quits the band and drives Jack home, and she’s very pissed. He says he’ll apologize to Ben, and she wants to know about the drinking.

They have a full out fight. They both scream at each other about how they have been wronged. Such a realistic marriage fight. I’m pretty sure my husband and I have had a version of that fight. In the morning they feel bad, but she tells him to go stay with Miguel (Jon Huertas) for a while. He gives her a “wowza” love speech and leaves.

“You were my big break.” Hearts and kisses, Jack!

Kate wants to sing. Kevin will take the meeting and Sophie is supportive. Randall looks through a photo album, and tells Beth he wants to adopt.

The finale was the beginning and almost the end of Jack and Rebecca. It did not reveal how he died just yet. We still only know that he does when the kids are teenagers, and that Kate blames herself. The episode managed to surprise me in that I did not cry, although I would have gladly married Jack Pearson on the spot with those words.

The whole season has just been a rich blend of good acting mixed with great stories. The timing of the reveals have been superb. While I am disappointed that we did not find out how Jack died, it would have been too much. I need to still be sad about William first. They could have ended the season with “Memphis,” but at least we have something bittersweet to look forward to next season.

See you next season, This Is Us.
