Gore Verbinski Steps Away From Directing ‘Gambit’
  |  @   |

Gambit. The one X-Men spinoff that seems to be having trouble finding a director. After losing two of its directors in the past two years, it looked like Gore Verbinski (A Cure For Wellness) may have been the director to finally make the Ragin’ Cajun film happen.

However, you can now add him to the growing list of directors who could not commit to the project, as Verbinski has departed the project. Find out what made the split happen in the full story below.

According to Deadline, Verbinski had a scheduling conflict with the film. But the split was amicable. Fox distributed A Cure For Wellness, so just take that into account. However, “scheduling conflicts” have been the reasons for many of these splits. Basically, it’s another word for creative differences or the director wasn’t that into the project. Whatever the case, it looks like Gambit has hit yet another production roadblock.

And it’s not clear what will happen to the film now that Disney has acquired Fox’s entertainment assets. However, it’s pretty clear that Fox will develop and produce as much as they can before the merger is complete.

Channing Tatum is still on board to play the title character, with Lauren Shuler Donner attached as producer.

Verbinski is the third director to step away from directing Gambit. The first was Rupert Wyatt, who said that he could not commit due to “scheduling conflicts.” However, reports say that Wyatt was unable to convince the studio of his vision. Doug Liman was the next filmmaker to board the project as director. However, he also walked out because he could not find a personal connection to the story.

So it does make Verbinski’s “scheduling conflict” reason a bit questionable. If that isn’t the case, details about the split will emerge eventually. But for now, Gambit is no closer to getting filmed than it was when Wyatt or Liman were on board.

Despite Tatum and Donner’s passion to get this film made, it doesn’t seem like there is any interest from any director. So now it becomes a question of how long before those close to the film realize that there is a chance that this film will not get made.

Just like The Flash, before it became Flashpoint, there were a handful of directors coming and going. So it’s just unfortunate to see that Gambit is suffering from the same fate as The Flash. Hopefully, the film can find a director. Or maybe Tatum should just let it go. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
