‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Featurette Shows A Different ‘Star Wars’ Universe Than We’re Used To
  |  @   |

Later this Summer, Solo: A Star Wars Story will be the latest Star Wars film to hit theaters. Unlike the core saga, Solo is a spinoff that will focus on the titular character’s origins. Han Solo, made famous by Harrison Ford, will now be played by much younger Alden Ehrenreich. Joining him will be Donald Glover, who plays a younger version of the smooth Lando Calrissian. While we have seen a couple of trailers and TV spots for the new film, the latest featurette for Solo details what the spinoff will be about and this is a different universe than we’re used to. Check out the featurette “Becoming Solo” here below.

Right from the get-go, we see a Star Wars universe that is grittier and darker. “The Star Wars Universe that we see in Solo is different than what we’ve seen in any previous Star Wars movies,” director Ron Howard said. “The Empire controls everything. Everyone is struggling to survive. But we discover this incredibly free spirit.”

“We’re meeting Han right before he becomes the Han that we know,” Glover said.

A common criticism of this film is that Ehrenreich doesn’t look or feel like the Han that we know. While Glover’s statement is true, it may not be enough to convince cynics to believe otherwise. That being said, the film will focus on Han as a young upstart who is looking to make a name for himself.

“You end up getting to see how this guy got to be the way he is,” Ehrenreich said. “It’s all part of the great expansion of the Han Solo world.”

That is very true. In it, we see that Han is a soldier, deep in the trenches of war. With dust flying around and walkers falling from the sky, it appears that even Han doesn’t quite fit into this world. So, he will take himself out of it by becoming a galactic smuggler.

Also, Ehrenreich hints at an entire world being built, which leads us to believe that we could see more of him in the future. This makes sense given the actor’s previous statements that he is signed on for at least three films.

The spinoff will chronicle Solo’s budding friendship with Chewbacca and Lando, while also seeing how Han becomes Han. So we will definitely see some familiar faces, while also run into a few new ones, like Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke, Game Of Thrones), a childhood friend and former flame, and Beckett (Woody Harrelson), Han’s mentor.

Of course, the film will cover Han’s first encounters with Chewie and the iconic Millennium Falcon. We even get to see a little more of the Sabaac game where Han learns that Lando won the Millennium Falcon in a game of cards.

One of the things that screenwriter Lawerence Kasdan likes about the character is his unpredictability and his recklessness. To which Clarke agrees. “He does these stupid things, which should never work,” Clarke said. “And they do. And he does it with bravado.”

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in Solo: A Star Wars Story, an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

Solo: A Star Wars Story, which also stars Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Joonas Suotamo, and Paul Bettany, opens in theaters on May 25, 2018.
