Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi Are Reuniting For Video Game Comedy ‘Free Guy’

Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi, was unremarkable to say the least. Reynolds has gone on to do other things like Deadpool while Waititi is perhaps better known for his directorial efforts, some of which also featured him in starring roles.

And now it looks like the long-awaited reunion between the two is finally happening. But not for a Green Lantern sequel. According to new reports, the two will pair up for Free Guy, a video game based comedy. More info on the project below.

The Hollywood Reporter says Free Guy centers on an average bank teller who feels like nothing more than a background character. One day he realizes he’s living in a video game. With the help of an avatar, he tries to prevent the makers of the game from shutting down his world.

Utkarsh Ambudkar, Jodie Comer, Joe Kerry, and Lil Rel will also have roles, but it is not clear who any of them will play.

Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) will direct Free Guy using a script written by Zak Penn (Ready Player One) and Matt Lieberman (The Christmas Chronicles).

The project was picked up by 20th Century Fox and 21 Laps Entertainment. Reynolds will be producing through Maximum Effort and Levy through his 21 Laps Entertainment. They will be joined by Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter who are producing through Berlanti Productions. You may know Berlanti and Schechter for their DC show efforts on the CW including Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl.

Reynolds can next be seen voicing the titular character in Detective Pikachu. He’ll also appear in Michael Bay’s 6 Underground, which will appear on Netflix, and he will reprise his role as Michael Bryce in the action comedy sequel The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard.

As for Waititi, who is best known for directing Thor: Ragnarok and co-directing and starring in What We Do in the Shadows, he will be directing a handful of features and TV episodes that include Jojo Rabbit, which will see him play an ethnically inaccurate version of Adolf Hitler. He will also direct an episode of The Mandalorian, a Star Wars series set to appear on Disney+ later this year, and will also voice a famed bounty hunter that has appeared in Star Wars canon named IG-88. However, it is not clear if he will be back as Korg in Avengers: Endgame.

No release date for Free Guy has been set as of yet.
