Sam Raimi Says Ideas For New ‘Evil Dead’ Movie Are Being Worked On
  |  @   |

In April of 2018 Starz decided to cancel Ash vs Evil Dead after three seasons, and just days after that the longtime star of the series and the original movie trilogy, Bruce Campbell, decided to hang up his chainsaw and boomstick and retire from the role of Ashley Williams. It was a difficult time for fans of the Evil Dead franchise, to say the least.

But as Campbell said in his farewell message, Ash will never die. And as he said just a couple of months before retiring, if the show was canceled they would begin thinking about a new movie in the franchise. Now franchise writer, director, and producer Sam Raimi has offered an update, saying that producer Rob Tapert, Campbell, and himself are currently “working on some ideas” for a new movie. See what he had to say below.

Raimi did an interview with Bloody Disgusting recently about the giant alligator movie he produced, Crawl.

During the interview, he was asked about the future of Evil Dead. Here’s what he had to say:

“I’d love to make another one. I don’t think TV is in its future but we’re talking about – Bruce, Rob, and myself – one or two different ways to go for the next movie.

We’d like to make another Evil Dead feature and in fact we’re working on some ideas right now.”

And when he says “ideas” he does mean multiple possibilities. Because there are different ways things could go. With Campbell retired it’s unlikely he’ll be back, but Raimi hasn’t given up on that still being an option. Another idea being discussed is a sequel to the 2013 remake/reboot/spinoff Evil Dead, which was directed by Fede Álvarez and starred Jane Levy. Raimi offered thoughts on both of these options:

“I would be thrilled if Bruce Campbell changed his mind about retirement, would come back for the original Evil Dead line. But if not, I’m very happy to work with, if Fede would come back and make the sequel”¦ but he’s such a big shot now. He’s so successful, an artist in demand, that I don’t think he’d want to do that.”

A follow-up to that movie without Álvarez is probably not off the table either, if he’s unable to do it.

Raimi said there’s also a third option being talked about, but he didn’t share any info on what that might be. One has to believe that the third option could be either casting someone new as Ash—as Campbell said in his farewell message, “Ash is as much a concept as a person. Where there is evil in this world, there must be one to counter – man or woman, it matters not.”—or doing another reboot like the 2013 movie with an entirely new group of characters coming face to face with unspeakable evils.

Thankfully it sounds like we won’t have to wait too long for an idea of where things go from here. According to Raimi, “I think you may see some action on the Evil Dead movie in the next six months.”
