‘Hamilton’ Star Daveed Diggs In Talks To Play Sebastian In Disney’s Live-Action ‘The Little Mermaid’
  |  @   |

It looks like another one of the main characters has been cast for The Little Mermaid, Disney’s live-action remake of their 1989 animated classic of the same name.

It’s being reported that Daveed Diggs is in talks to join the cast. If ink meets paper he’ll voice the role of Sebastian the crab, who sang the Academy Award-winning song “Under the Sea” in the animated original.

Diggs is known for playing Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette in Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s hit Broadway show Hamilton. Miranda is also involved with The Little Mermaid, producing and working on new and original songs for the remake with Alan Menken, who created music for the original and won two Oscars for his work, including the aforementioned “Under the Sea.”

Diggs also had roles in The Get Down, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Wonder, Ferdinand, Black-ish, Velvet Buzzsaw, and Amazon’s Undone. Upcoming projects include TNT’s Snowpiercer series, Netflix’s animated Dr. Seuss series Green Eggs and Ham, Disney”¢Pixar’s Soul, and Showtime’s The Good Lord Bird in which he’ll be playing Frederick Douglass.

If a deal is finalized and Diggs officially signs on he’ll join Halle Bailey, who is set to play Ariel, Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay, and Awkwafina, who are said to be playing Ursula, Flounder, and Scuttle, and Javier Bardem, who will be playing Ariel’s father King Triton.

The remake is being directed by Rob Marshall, who previously helmed Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Into the Woods, and Mary Poppins Returns for Disney.

The screenplay was written by Jane Goldman (Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, Kingsman, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) and David Magee (Finding Neverland, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, Life of Pi, Mary Poppins Returns).

Disney has not yet set a release date for The Little Mermaid.
