Two talented filmmakers are teaming up to write the script for a potential TV series based on Explorers, the cult favorite 1985 sci-fi movie which was directed by Joe Dante and starred Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix, and Jason Presson.
Cary Fukunaga and David Lowery are joining forces to pen the script, which will just be a pilot episode for now, and the potential show’s bible—a pitch that includes more information on the show, its characters, future episodes, etc. to help sell the potential series to networks.
We are accustomed to seeing very aggressive bank robbers in films. Some so hostile they resort to taking hostages or mowing down people with their heavy artillery. But every once in a while, you get a different kind of bank robber. One that is unconventional. And that is what you will see in The Old Man and the Gun starring Robert Redford.
Fox Searchlight has released a new trailer for the film, which doesn’t hide the fact that it is partially based on a true story. But the most interesting thing about it is that this film feels unlike any other bank robbery or heist film in terms of its cast, how it was shot, and even the music. Everything about it feels like a callback to the movies of old. Check out the trailer below.
A24 has released an official trailer for A Ghost Story, an upcoming drama starring Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara and recent Oscar winner Casey Affleck.
The movie tells the story of a deceased man who returns as a ghost to comfort his wife. It’s directed by David Lowery, who previously directed Ain’t Them Bodies Saints (which also starred Mara and Affleck) and Disney’s live-action remake of Pete’s Dragons. Lowery is also set to take on another remake for Disney, Peter Pan.

This year’s Pete’s Dragon comes off the heels of Disney’s recent live-action adaptation successes like Maleficent, Cinderella, and The Jungle Book. While the original film was never as popular as some of these remakes, it has gained a cult following and David Lowery’s reimagining resonated with critics. Now, the film is available for you to own for your home entertainment pleasure on Blu-ray/DVD or Digital Download.
In this reimagining, a 10-year-old boy orphaned boy named Pete (Oakes Fegley) is discovered living in the woods, and he claims to have been there with his friend Elliot, a giant green dragon. A local park ranger named Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard) takes him in, while trying to discover the truth about Pete’s situation. While his story seems far-fetched, Grace’s dad (Robert Redford) has been telling the tale of a mythical dragon in the woods for decades. Meanwhile, Elliot goes looking for Pete, only to come up against Karl Urban’s crew of lumberjacks, who are on the hunt for the dragon.

Looking at David Lowery‘s Pete’s Dragon, you might not have known that it was based on the 1977 Disney film of the same name. In fact, the only similarity that the two films share between each other is that there is boy whose friend just so happens to be a real live dragon. Normally these reimagined stories would involve contemporary tweaks while staying true to the source material. Just look at The Jungle Book or Cinderella. But Lowery didn’t set out to that with Pete’s Dragon. Instead, his film deconstructs the idea of a remake of a Disney classic, and he turns it into something that resembles those childhood bedtime stories that your parents would read to you.
