Guillermo del Toro Confirms He and Travis Beacham Are Writing ‘Pacific Rim 2’
  |  @   |

Thanks in most part to the Chinese box office, a sequel to Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim may actually happen. The film did gross $400 million worldwide, but had a weak $100 million effort in the U.S. Still a $300 overseas box office is nothing to scoff at, and with the film hitting Blu-ray and DVD shelves this week, there could be more of a push to get a sequel to get made.

While the Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers Studio partnership may be over, del Toro knows what fans want a sequel to happen. So in anticipation that he does get the greenlight, del Toro has says that he and Travis Beacham are writing the script to the sequel.

In an interview with IGN, del Toro confirms that he is working on the script:

“We are writing the sequel. Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to green light or not, that’s definitely above my pay rate.”

Charlie Day teased the idea that del Toro envisioned Newt becoming the villain in the next film, and there were talks of the sequel featuring Kaiju and Jaeger hybrid. But as far as we know, these are just ideas that are being thrown around.

Again, the weak domestic box office doesn’t really sway in a sequel’s favor. But Pacific Rim did cost $200 million – with WB footing the majority of the bill – and it did gross $400 million worldwide. Blu-ray and DVD sales could help the chances of a sequel being developed. But with Legendary and WB both having their hands on the property, it could be a while before we could hear a decision on the matter.
