Last week there was a report from Collider that said the Star Wars spinoffs were being put on hold. The news came after Solo: A Star Wars Story‘s reported inability to meet certain box office expectations. As a result, this put the multiple planned spinoffs on pause. But plans for The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson’s new trilogy and the series of movies from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were to continue to be developed.
However, it appears now that the spinoffs are back on, or merely they were never actually put on hold. A new report says Lucasfilm is still actively developing anthology films for the Star Wars universe. This includes films for Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett. More on the story here below.
The Star Wars Story spinoffs are not going as well as Disney hoped they would.
With only Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Solo: A Star Wars Story under their belt, Disney and Lucasfilm are considering pulling back on their spinoffs after the latter’s disappointing box office numbers. This includes the Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett spinoffs that were in development. More on the story below.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will pave the way for future Star Wars spinoffs. These films will focus on the untold stories that are considered legend within the universe. While there is excitement to see more Star Wars, there is also a little bit of anxiety as it is unclear what the future may hold for these spinoffs and what will happen beyond Episode IX.
From what we know so far, Gareth Edwards‘ Rogue One will center on a group of rebels’ daring mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, while Christopher Miller and Phil Lord will direct a young Han Solo spinoff. As for the saga films, Rian Johnson is currently hard at work with the yet-to-be-titled Episode VIII, while Colin Trevorrow will be gearing up for Episode IX. After that, well, your guess is as good as ours.
