Back in 1999, Dean Parisot made a little movie called Galaxy Quest, a scifi-adventure comedy starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and Alan Rickman, which at first glance seemed like a parody — and a poke at — scifi franchises like Star Trek. There’s the cast of a cancelled 1970s science fiction television series forced to eke out a living at science fiction fan conventions and grand opening store promotions 20 years after their heyday. Said cast resents the show’s main star, a scene-stealer who takes credit for their successes and often makes paid appearances without them. And there’s the rabid, geeky fans at the convention who seemingly can’t differentiate between an actor and the role he played.

But while Galaxy Quest is humorous in its parody of all those stereotypes, it turns out the film is actually a loving homage to science fiction and its loyal fans. And it’s perfect in every way.

‘Galaxy Quest’ To Get A Limited Collector’s Edition Blu-ray Steelbook For Its 20th Anniversary

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced the release of a Limited Collector’s Edition Blu-ray Steelbook for Galaxy Quest for the film’s 20th anniversary.

The special “Never Give Up, Never Surrender” 20th anniversary edition for the 1999 scifi action-comedy will be released on September 21, 2019 for purchase exclusively at Best Buy, and contains a host of bonus features, which are listed here below.

Wait, What? ‘Galaxy Quest’ Was Initially R-Rated

Speaking with Lindsey Collins—producer of the massive Disney blockbuster that hit theaters this weekend, John Carter—recently, Collider’s Steve Weintraub was informed of some long-lost buried treasure of sorts.

Apparently Galaxy Quest, the fantastic 1999 sci-fi comedy starring Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, Sam Rockwell, Tony Shalhoub, and Daryl Mitchell (as well as a slew of other familiar faces) as the stars of an old sci-fi TV series (a la Star Trek) who inadvertently find themselves beamed out to space to help very real aliens put an end to the ongoing threats of an evil being named Sarris and his crew, was initially an R-rated comedy before being cut down to the PG version fans know and love.
