Great Philadelphia Comic Con 2019 Interview: Jeffrey Combs of ‘Re-Animator’ Fame
This past weekend, The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center hosted 3 days of geek craziness at the Great Philadelphia Comic Con. The Con’s motto is “Get Ur Geek On” and fans poured in to meet celebrity guests, take in four panel rooms worth of Q&A discussions, weekend-long gaming tournaments, cosplay, and more. One of the celebrities I was most interested in meeting was Jeffrey Combs. A veteran character actor with over 130 credits to his name on IMDb, Combs was there in between co-stars from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Jake Busey from Peter Jackson’s The Frighteners. While many know him from his classic role as Dr. Herbest West in Re-Animator (1985), Combs has been performing as Edgar Allan Poe in a one-man show for a decade. I was able to speak with him about the convention, his career, and his upcoming work. I totally got my geek on!

The best places to find horror movies are on streaming sites. Most of the horror that ends up in theatres are money grabs that rely totally on jump scares and cheap parlor tricks… I’m talking movies like Ouija, Annabelle, and the dreadful looking, upcoming Sinister 2. But horror fans can rely on sites like Netflix to update regularly, and breathe some fresh air into otherwise stale genres. After nearly twenty minutes of “spin the queue” last night, I settled on Would You Rather. The film’s cast struck me right away as it’s two featured stars were Brittany Snow (great in Hairspray and the Pitch Perfect films) and Dr. Herbert West himself, horror veteran Jeffrey Combs. The plot seemed utterly simple: 8 people under desperate financial stress are invited to a dinner party hosted by an eccentric millionaire. Together, they’ll play a game, and the winner will be taken care of. What could possibly go wrong?

Femme Fatales
The Complete Second Season
DVD
Directed by Mark A. Altman and Robert Meyer Burnett
Starring Tanit Phoenix, Eric Roberts, Steve Railsback
Entertainment One
Release Date: July 16, 2013
The Cinemax series Femme Fatales must be some kind of hit for the pay cable network best known for having a saucier programming line-up than their competition. As the old saying goes, if it’s 1 a.m. in the morning and two big-bosomed lesbians are getting it on then brother you’re probably watching Cinemax. Based partially on a long-running men’s magazine specializing in profiles of actresses and starlets from the B-grade sci-fi, horror, and action flicks going back six decades or more, Femme Fatales is an anthology series designed to appeal to the periodical’s readership. The show features stories of crime, passion, betrayal, murder, and occasionally some truly off-the-wall material that star at least one or two recognizable characters actors or actresses who never quite took hold of that big brass ring but still manage to keep their careers alive and kicking.
The show’s second season ran from May to August of 2012 and now Entertainment One has collected every episode in the new 3-disc DVD set Femme Fatales: The Complete Second Season.
