This year’s box office takes keep getting bigger and bigger and, if I’m any judge at all (you’ll find out sooner or later that I am), the year will top off sometime around the middle of July. But for now, following the release of Iron Man and Prince Caspian, the latest big release of ’08 has definitely made a splash.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released to the public eye last Thursday and earned $25 million in its opening day. Whether you loved it or hated it, you can’t deny that it was always going to get a good showing.
And the numbers are definitely backing that up, even at this estimated stage. Produced by Paramount, Indy 4 has so far raked in an estimated $126 million domestically since its Thursday release. That includes an estimated $101 million weekend haul, giving it (if the estimations hold up) a $2.3 million lead over Iron Man‘s recent near hundred million dollar haul.
A few factors have added to Indy‘s exceptional haul, not the least being that it is the Memorial Day long weekend. So with a full day to come Monday, Indy 4 is going to be tallied alongside heavy weights like 2007’s Spider-Man 3, which scored $151.1 million in its opening weekend, and Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, which raked in $172.8 million after debuting on a Thursday before a non-holiday weekend in May 2005.
Not surprisingly, making out this weekend’s top three are The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and Iron Man, who are competing too close for Narnia‘s liking, separated by only $3 million.

This was always going to be big.
