As part of Amazon’s monthly $5 MP3 album deal for April 2012, Playlist: The Very Best Of Elvis Presley is on sale for only $5.
The saga and adoration of Elvis Presley brings on a division among people that gives new meaning to the word love/hate. But make no mistake about a few points here, Elvis Presley may not have invented rock and roll and he may not invented rockabilly, but what he almost singlehandedly DID invent was how to project a certain attitude and style to it, infusing a danger and an edge. Nobody, no front man in music history who has followed him, does not owe at least something to the unpredictability of the swagger and charisma that was the early Elvis Presley, from Iggy Pop, to John Lennon, to Jim Morrison, to Robert Plant and up and down the musical ladder.
Presley showed HOW to be a rock star, how to be a charismatic force in the musical community, and how to do it successfully. Of course as his career went on, he became mired in self-parody and wrongheaded choices, ultimately becoming a national laughingstock and subject of ridicule as his girth and erratic energy became bigger than his legend. But like most of music’s tragic figures, what remains on record is still the froth on top of the drink, however bitter it may have tasted in Elvis’ final years (the ’68 comeback special exempted, which was an amazing piece of work). There isn’t much you haven’t heard on this very best of collection, but that’s the point, it’s music that’s timeless and irresistible for the most part, from the early years that spawned “Jailhouse Rock” and “Don’t Be Cruel” to his last gasps for musical air with “In the Ghetto” and “Burning Love.” Love him or hate him, Elvis Presley remains a musical force in any genre of music, a blanketing shadow that looms overhead, but never smothers.
