The ArchitectThe Architect TPB

Cover Price: $9.95; Available Now

I’ve never been a big fan of horror in comics, preferring to get my terror fix from novels and movies. But a recent appreciation for horror comics from the EC library, along with a long-time love of architecture, made me jump at the chance to review the The Architect. This graphic novel collects the online comic by scribe Mike Baron and artist Andie Tong, and is advertised as being a horror story loosely based on the life of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

Roark Dexter Smith is man whose talents far exceed his Frank-Lloyd-Wright-esque gift for architectural design. He’s also an black arts devotee who belongs to a cult of druids who worship mushrooms. Everything comes together when Roark begins building his crowning achievement, The Bluff House, in the wilds of Wisconsin. But things go terribly wrong when a fire devastates the project and Roarke, his wife, and his assistant end up mysteriously missing.

TV Review: ‘The Universe’ — Mars: The Red Planet
space
Bad Monkey   |

The Universe-Mars: The Red PlanetI’ve long held a fascination with Mars. It all started when I was 10 years old and given an old issue of National Geographic which had a map of the red planet inside, complete with the names of all the major geographical features. From there on out, I was devouring science fiction as fast as I could read it, and Mars was a cornerstone of my obsession… fueled by the Martian tales of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Ray Bradbury.

Fast-forward to present day and The History Channel has given us The Universe, a series exploring the frontiers beyond our world. In the second episode of the series, Mars: The Red Planet focuses on Earth’s celestial neighbor, and the one planet in the solar system most like our own. It’s a scientific exploration of Mars’ past, present, and future, all made nicely accessible thanks to interviews with the scientists and astronomers studying the planet today.

Movie Review: I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry
space
Bad Monkey   |

Chuck and Larry PosterGoing to an Adam Sandler movie is pretty much hit or miss. You’ll either get big comedy fun like 50 First Dates and Happy Gilmore… or formulaic idiocy like The Waterboy. With his latest film, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry you end up somewhere in-between. There are definitely funny moments, but a majority of the film struggles to find memorable material to fill the gaps between laughs.

Firefighter Larry Valentine (Kevin James) is so distraught after his wife’s death that he can’t even bring himself to open mail with her name on it. Unfortunately, this causes him to miss the window for transferring his life insurance benefits to his kids. Three years later after a near-death experience in the line of duty, Larry is so desperate to make sure his children are taken care of, that he concocts a sham marriage with the only person he can trust… best friend and fellow firefighter Chuck Levine (Adam Sandler). In an attempt to pile on the funny, Chuck happens to be a notorious womanizer and self-proclaimed “man-whore.”

This marriage of convenience quickly starts spinning out of control as a fraud investigator (Steve Buscemi) makes it his mission in life to expose the truth. Alas, since the truth can land them in prison, Chuck & Larry have no choice but to live the lie they’ve created. This leads to a parade of every gay stereotype you can imagine, as our heroes face bias and intolerance now that their secret is out.
