I want to be forthright here, I only chose to review this comic because I thought the title was the verbal equivalent to exhibitionism. With a title like Satanic Hell, Vol. 1, your expectations are pretty narrowed. The fact that it was based in Texas? Well, that was just icing on the proverbial cake since I live in the Lone Star State, too.

The story is about a time in the not too distant future where things in Texas have gotten so bad that the local and state governments have been privatized. And in Texas, the wealthiest folks also happen to be the clergy. With millions of followers tithing weekly and having diversified their financial holdings, the fundamentalist churches in Texas found themselves able to actually purchase the rights to govern the entire state. having taken that bold step, they began to change laws and rules, ensuring that their ways were the only legal ways. Free will is a thing of the past, people are rated according to their attendance of religious services. In effect, the idea was to create a heaven on earth. Unfortunately, even heaven has a dark side.

A little over two years ago, I wrote a little Kickstarter Spotlight for an up and coming graphic novel/comic series. Change out your calendar a couple of times and you get the present day incarnation: Mother Russia. I can definitely attest to the fact it is everything I expected and more. I had previously seen some of the pages, but I just read the final product and thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. Keep reading and I’ll explain why!

Roddy Piper Chair Header

“Rowdy” Roddy Piper left a lasting legacy in and out of the wrestling ring, when he passed away Friday, from cardiac arrest at the age of 61. Commonly known for his Hall of Fame wrestling career, Piper was one of the greatest villains ever in the ring. Piper used his natural charisma to segue into a fairly successful, although mostly B-movie laden film career. His most iconic role came in John Carpenter’s 1988 sci-fi thriller, They Live, as a drifter who stumbles into an alien invasion. That film made him a cult hero, and solidified his transition from the ring to big screen performer. Piper was active to the end; his IMDB page has 8 projects listed in the production stages. One of them currently in post-production is Chad Ferrin‘s adaptation of Peter Simeti‘s original graphic novel, The Chair from Alterna Comics. The makers of that film are dedicating the project to the late wrestler/actor.

Kickstarter Spotlight: The Chair

Turning comics and graphic novels into feature films is nothing new. And doing it without a big budget supplied by a major studio is almost impossible. However, the key word there is almost.

The Kickstarter campaign for The Chair is all about having a stellar cast take this disturbing graphic novel and adapting it into a film that still captures the horror and darkness of the original work. With a modest budget for the film and a streamlined concept of where the money is going, the only part left is you, the donor. So read on to see what you can do to make this psychological thriller come to life!

Dark And The Beastie Tree

Okay, this is getting out of hand. There are so many awesome Kickstarter campaigns that I’m going to be broke from supporting them. That said, here at Geeks Of Doom we try to shine the spotlight on some of the most impactful and impressive ones out there. Lilith Dark and The Beastie Tree is just such a project. I read the Kickstarter page and immediately signed up as a backer (number 101 if you must know). I’m a huge believer in paying it forward and Charles Dowd is doing just that. “CDowd” once took his little girl to the comic shop and found nothing for her or her age group, so rather than ranting and raving he decided to put his skills to work.

And with that Lilith Dark was created, a tough lass with a hatred of meatloaf! And who doesn’t hate meatloaf, you know? It’s a lump of ground beef with lord knows what inside of it covered in ketchup (or blood if you have an overactive imagination; no don’t ask). Luckily, Lilith has a dinosaur who is all too happy to consume said meatloaf — dinos are tough, you know? But enough about the meatloaf, Lilith has more worries than just at dinner time. Of course, a lot of these worries stemming from her imagination. That, and the spooky tree across the street where she discovered monsters.
