January 3 marks the birthday of J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the beloved The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings books. Born in 1892 in Bloemfontein, South Africa, today would have been the author’s 120th birthday.
In celebration and remembrance of the man who put the word hobbit into our everyday vocabulary, Tolkien fans around the world today will raise a glass and toast “The Professor” at 9pm.
For those of you who need some help with toasting, TheOneRing‘s got you covered:
For those unfamiliar with British toast-drinking ceremonies: To make the Birthday Toast, you stand, raise a glass of your choice of drink (not necessarily alcoholic), and say the words “˜The Professor’ before taking a sip (or swig, if that’s more appropriate for your drink). Sit and enjoy the rest of your drink.
Remember, that’s 9pm your local time. The Tolkien Society has a page set up for the 2012 toast where fans can post about how and where they’re celebrating.
