Yesterday saw the first tiny bit of footage from Tim Burton’s upcoming big-screen adaptation Dark Shadows.
Now, the full theatrical trailer has been released, and you can watch it here below.
Dark Shadows stars Johnny Depp as the centuries’ old vampire Barnabas Collins, who’s returned from the grave in the year 1972 to take over his family’s estate in Maine. The film also stars Helena Bonham-Carter, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, and Chloe Moretz.
I’m a big fan of anything Tim Burton and Johnny Depp is one of my favorite actors; add in that this is an adaptation of a soap opera I used to watch (in re-runs) when I was a kid and it’s about a vampire, and I’m totally in. Because there was already so much I knew about the original, I really have tried to keep away from news and interviews regarding the movie adaptation. Aside from seeing the images released, I didn’t know anything about the movie except who was cast in it. It wasn’t until yesterday when I had to write up the news about the snippet of footage to be shown on the Ellen talk show that I actually read the official synopsis. Therefore, when I watched this full theatrical trailer just now, I was a bit surprised, to say the least. This isn’t the dark serious horror movie I thought it was going to be – this is a dark comedy the likes of Burton’s Beetle Juice.
I did enjoy the humor in this trailer and I know I’m going to really dig the movie, but once I heard T-Rex’s “Bang A Gong” kick in, I realized that this is a fish-out-of-water story about 200-year-old vampire who has to adjust to life in the disco-loving ’70s, while trying to escape the amorous advances of the witch whose curse turned him into a creature of the night. It even had Barry White’s “My Everything,” so you know whacky hijinx ensue! All that was missing from this trailer was one of those movie trailer record scratches.
Take a look at the trailer and tell us what you think. Dark Shadows opens in theaters on May 11.
