Spoilers below for Ash vs Evil Dead…
When we last left our demon slaying heroes on Ash vs Evil Dead, Ash (Bruce Campbell) made a deal with the head demon Ruby (Lucy Lawless) that put him and his new pals out of harm’s way and safely in his own personal paradise… Jacksonville, Florida. For the Season 2 premiere, “Home,” we open with Ruby battling demons. Lucy Lawless quickly gets introduced to Evil Dead tradition, as one spews boiling black vomit blood onto her”¦ welcome to the club, Lucy! She fights them off long enough to realize that despite the truce, only Ash can truly end this. Unfortunately, that’s going to interfere with Ash’s plans. He is the star of the Jacksonville show, chainsawing through kegs and using his boomstick on beer bottles.
Ash – “Jacksonville, I love you!”
Everyone – “WE LOVE YOU, TOO”
Ash – “I know you do”¦ hey! I love me, too!”
Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) and Pablo (Ray Santiago) are not thrilled, but hey, such is life. That is of course promptly interrupted by a mother/daughter demon combo attack. The amount of blood spilled in the pre-credits scenes alone would make a young Peter Jackson jealous. Four main characters coated in blood, just mere minutes into the premiere.
Ash knows where to find Ruby: at his hometown of Elk’s Grove, Michigan. There, he is notorious for slicing up his friends and sister in the old cabin in the woods from the original Evil Dead film. “Ashy Slashy” is his dishonorable nickname. We actually get to meet Ash’s dad, Brock Williams (Lee Majors). Let’s just say, it’s kinda obvious why Ash is the way he is. We do instantly get a hilarious Six Million Dollar Man joke though.
It’s weird seeing Ash in a vulnerable spot. The people of Elk’s Grove want nothing to do with him. There’s this amazing exchange with the sheriff in a crowded bar: “He went crazy and chopped up his friends,” mocks the sheriff. “Okay, that’s not true, I did NOT go crazy. I knew exactly what I was doing when I chopped up my friends,” Ash responds.
Pablo is having nightmarish visions since having the Necronomicon latch onto his face in the Season 1 finale. His visions lead the trio to a crematorium where they meet up with Ruby and her demonic kids leaving Ash to wonder, “Do I help because I should… or because she’s hot?” I cannot think of a more Ash line than that.
This was everything Evil Dead fans want in 30 awesome minutes. There are plenty of Ash’s one-liners, legitimately laugh-out-loud moments, and epic amounts of blood and gore. I can’t wait till Lee Majors joins the party and starts blasting deadites. Each of the four main characters has a clear arc already, with Ash wanting to earn back his hometown’s approval, Ruby wanting to stop her evil(er) offspring, and Kelly and Pablo trying to fend off possession after both encountered the true evil of the Necronomicon in season 1. If you couldn’t tell, I am already loving Season 2.
Ash vs Evil Dead‘s Season 2 premiere debuts Sunday night October 2, 2016 on Starz. You can see the first episode now on Starz.com or through Amazon Prime if you subscribe to Starz streaming service. It’s also on cable on Starz on Demand. If you need to catch up on Season 1, that’s available now on Blu-Ray.
