Wow! Talk about under the radar! There’s some Image releases that get TONS of hype. You’re Walking Dead, your Saga, etc. But Point of Impact #1 comes out without so much as a decent press release and it’s one of the most entertaining books I’ve read in months!
Jay Faerber turns in a script that is straight up modern day crime/thriller noir. It’s got all the elements of the classic murder mystery thriller, updated for today’s audience. There’s murder, adultery, cheating, backstabbing, and a little bit of Law & Order type police drama thrown in for good measure. The story is absolutely riveting, and is a great first chapter in this mini series.
In one short issue, Faerber sets up potential for a LOT of upcoming twists and turns. What I like most about this comic is how the murder of one woman effects every single character in the book. You quickly find out that the victim wasn’t exactly an angel and in this issue alone, almost everyone that’s introduced is a suspect. VERY well written murder mystery/crime comic.
Artist Kory Kuranel is brilliant in his simplicity. He draws a world that is dark and moody, yet clean at the same time. There’s not a ton of detail in his work, it’s very crisp and clean. While normally not a fan of black and white comics, I have to say, I would enjoy this book LESS if it was in color. Kuranel makes fantastic use of tones and shadows, making it the perfect blend with the story that Faerber has crafted.
BUY THIS COMIC!!!!! There’s some scandalous scenes, but nothing over the top, and it leaves just enough to the imagination. By the end of the issue, you’re not quite ready to start trying to solve the mystery yourself, but your mind will run wild with speculation. All in all, a great comic. I highly recommend you give it a try.
Bought the issue on Comixology. Not a bad 1st issue. Sets up the story pretty well. Will it hold up? Will this turn into a police procedural like the many on TV?
