Logans Run Aftermath #6Logan’s Run: Aftermath #6
Written by Paul J. Salamoff
Art by Carsten Biernat
Colors by Jesse Heagy
Letters by Warren Montgomery
Cover by Mike Dorman
Bluewater Comics
Release Date: October 17, 2012
Cover Price: $2.99

Logan’s Run: Aftermath #6 is pretty much what a fun science fiction comic book should be. At least, on some levels. Unfortunately, some production issues get in the way of what should be an enjoyable comic.

Paul J. Salamoff takes some risks in this issue with storytelling. Unfortunately, none of them really pay off here. It just leaves the reader confused. REALLY REALLY confused. Don’t get me wrong, you can follow the story and you get a beginning, middle, and end, but you feel like you’re missing something the whole issue. I’m not sure if it’s because I haven’t read the previous couple of issues, but I figured “It’s Logan’s Run! It’ll be easy to follow!” I was pretty mistaken. The biggest problem in this issue is that Salamoff seems to almost want to make a silent issue and it’s just not working out in his favor. The lack of dialouge just leaves the reader confused and guessing as to what’s going on. Not very impressed with how the plot pays out here.

Comics are a labor of love and a literary genre that receives far too little press, not to mention praise. So, in the spirit of “there is no such thing as bad or in this case mixed, publicity” let’s move on. Bluewater Productions is an independent publishing company who specialize in biography comics. Their latest offering in this genre arriving in late September appears to be a mixed bag, with its heart in the right place, and its tongue firmly planted in cheek. Elizabeth Taylor: Tribute is a 40 page short graphic novel in their ongoing Female Force series highlighting the important achievements of famous women from Hillary Clinton to Marilyn Monroe.

Writer Dina Gachman blends pop culture with historical facts to highlight what made Dame Elizabeth Taylor such a celebrated actress and public figure, but is a bit heavy on the fizzy pop.

“I spoke with God in your little church here today. He says He’s expecting you”¦” – Vincent Price House of Horrors #1

This is my first foray into Vincent Price. Ever. Sure, I know who he is, and sure, I should probably be ashamed of myself for not being more familiar with his work. I came into this comic series totally cold, just looking for some horror fun in the vein of Tales from the Crypt or the recent Ragemoor from Dark Horse. I figured this might be a bit campy, but still have some creepy chills and fun thrills… and I was right!

I don’t want to spoil much, because half of the fun was coming into this comic with no real expectations and not knowing what the story was even about. Let’s just say church member Nick doesn’t spend all his time alone in his house watching television and reading the good book…

Letters by Warren Montgomery
Bluewater Comics
Release Date: February 22, 2012
Cover Price: $3.99

John Saul’s The God Project #1 is the first comic adaptation of any of John Saul‘s work. As a mainstay in the horror genre, it is surprising that it has taken this long to see any of his work rendered in sequential art. While I haven’t read this particular book, I do know the author’s work fairly well and I was quite happy to be able to review this incarnation of one of his earlier works.

The story is a pretty standard one here at the beginning. Three teenagers at play and one disappears, the whole premise of the story hinges on finding the missing teen and the events that transpire during the initial search.

If you believe in life after love, then here’s something new for you: Female Force: Cher, a new one-shot comic book from Bluewater Comics.

First of all, when I opened my review copy I was like “What’s Cher Force One?” not realizing that 1) that this is not, in fact, the actual name of this comic book; 2) this is not a story about superhero Cher, so she does not have any powers – no, not even the power to turn back time, and 3) this is actually a biographical story ABOUT Cher.

Ok, so I’ve lost about 99% of you with those revelations, so for the remaining one percent (shout-out to my Cher-shirt-wearing mother-in-law, thanks for staying), here’s what you can expect from Female Force: Cher.
