As you’re all very much aware, Judd Apatow owns the comedy genre right now. While he’s only directed two massive hits in The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up (which he also wrote and produced) — he’s also got a mass of others he’s touched like Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Superbad, and the upcoming Pineapple Express.
Variety reports that Adam Sandler, Seth Rogan, and Leslie Mann will star in Apatow’s next still-untitled project, where he’ll actually step in and direct. It’s pretty interesting, as it involves two of his “regulars” and someone from a whole other side of the genre.
Seth Rogen, as always, will lend his talents as well as Leslie Mann, who is Mr. Apatow’s wife and is in pretty much in anything he can put her in. Then there’s Adam Sandler. Yes, that Adam Sandler. Apatow and Sandler were actually roommates at one point and collaborated on Adam’s sophomore CD, What the Hell Happened to Me. More recently, Apatow was a writer on Sandler’s upcoming film, You Don’t Mess With the Zohan, and Mann co-starred alongside Sandler in Big Daddy, so there are connections and this was only a matter of time. No further information on other casting, title, or release dates.
Remember back when Adam Sandler was the Top Dog? When I was in high school in the late ’90s, that man was untouchable. Since then, it’s become “uncool” to like him or his stuff and a lot of people will be angered to think of him in the current “Top Dog’s” movie. Personally, Sandler has been fairly consistent in my eyes, but has definitely strayed away over the years and I think that this could be a great chance for him to regain some steam. We all know that he can act as we saw in Punch Drunk Love and Reign Over Me, so to step from the silly comedy section to the true (and most like R-rated) comedy section should be an interesting adventure.
Aside from that, my opinion is a little biased, as Adam Sandler grew up about 20 minutes from where I was born and raised and I’ve always been a huge fan of his. After first hearing his CD, They’re All Gonna Laugh At You, it was all over for me… I was hooked.
I’d love to hear what everyone else thinks about the fusion of comedic names. Similar to the recent fusion of Sandler’s Happy Madison gang, Apatow’s gang and Broken Lizard in Strange Wilderness? Completely different?
You know what, I think this could work.
It would be a great combo.
If Apatow could bring out something in Sandler like PTA did in PunchDrunk Love or just reach for some edgier stuff, it would be really cool.
This has promise.
