‘Star Wars’ Retro-Inspired Travel Posters

Empress Eve   |    |

Zazzle has created a series of Star Wars retro-inspired travel posters.

Two of the three posters in the series, one each for Hoth and Tattooine, are available StarWarsShop, with one for Coruscant coming soon.

The posters were inspired by the FDR-era government-sponsored WPA (Works Progress Administration) posters. The Hoth poster (my favorite!), enticing you to visit that planet’s ice caves, is a direct take on the WPA “See America” poster.

Zazzle co-founder Jeff Beaver talked to starwars.com about the poster series.

Doing a mashup with the WPA posters was pretty much a no-brainer, since it goes great with the overall theme of conservation, and a lot of people are familiar with the content already. So it’s fun because the additions to the actual art are pretty subtle. Non-fans might not notice, but people that are really into the films will get the references and enjoy it.

When asked if there’s be anymore posters for other retro Star Wars poster, perhaps for popular destinations like Dagobah, Yavin, or Kamino, Beaver said, “Absolutely. We think it would be fun to do a whole series of Clone Wars-era recruitment and military posters, too.”

saw a bunch like this at the Star Tours ride at Disneyland this year

Mashup? Then they shouldn’t charge for it. While I think it is a GREAT idea, in fact 5 years ago I did my own retro travel poster for Hoth that was completely original but inspired by world travel posters. To just rip off the original art instead of hiring the illustrators who me, as a creative director, am always trying to find work for is insulting. Why not throw some work to a starving artist then I’ll gladly pay.
