Peter Jackson Talks With Warner Bros. To Turn ‘The Hobbit’ Into A Trilogy

There has been some speculation recently on whether or not Peter Jackson‘s The Hobbit could be turned into a trilogy. The classic Tolkien tale is currently on track to be released as two features, but the filmmakers are spearheading to change that and if it does happen, Jackson and the rest of the team could head back to New Zealand next summer for two months of additional shooting.

Talks of a possible trilogy started earlier this month during Comic-Con weekend, where the director had a panel for the first film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The idea of adding a third entry was still very much in the early stages, but the fact that Jackson gave such intricate details about the possibility of adding a third chapter to The Hobbit film franchise gave many the impression that this was no joke.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, talks have accelerated since that weekend, and the studios are on board if they can meet financial goals. This includes revising some of the deals that the cast have already made. WB would also have to work out some of the rights issues.

“If we’re going to do it, we have to make a decision soon,” says a source close to the production. “It’s strongly driven by the filmmakers’ desire to tell more of the story.”

Both parties feel very strongly about making The Hobbit into a trilogy makes me wonder what additional notes, made by J.R.R. Tolkien himself, were left out. And what about the footage that was already shot for the two films, will any of the unused footage make its way into the third film? Should The Hobbit become a trilogy, the third installment would probably be a film that bridges the gap between The Hobbit: There and Back Again and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring.

We will probably get confirmation of The Hobbit becoming two films or three within the coming weeks.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens in theaters on December 14, 2012. Its sequel, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, will be released on December 13, 2013.

  1. This is a horrible idea, making a second movie with some stuff from the Appendices of LOTR  to pad out the narrative is already padding out the story; and making a third film is really pushing the goodwill of Tolkien fans and moviegoers alike.  Peter Jackson should not have to make another installment to satisfy the greed of New Line execs, and shame on him if does so.

  2. i liked it as 2 but 3 stinks of a money grab, as usual. Jackson will probably lose respect if he does this.
