Superfly, the soundtrack to one of the most memorable films from the early 1970s “blaxploitation” era and containing music written and produced by the late, great R&B/funk legend Curtis Mayfield, is now available on MP3 format from Amazon this month for only $5.00 as part of their 100 albums for $5 each deal.
Released originally over 40 years ago, Superfly remains more than just a curious curio from that genre where tough dialogue, almost miniscule budgets, and realistic gritty cinematography, along with liberal dashes of sex and violence, were large orders of the day. It’s a nice cornerstone of a soundtrack, taking the reins where the equally memorable musicality for Shaft left off about a year earlier.
Mayfield takes the ball now and delivers a mammoth slam dunk, superb tracks like the emotionally packed “Little Child, Running Wild,” the hypnotically caught in a groove loop “Give Me Your Love,” and well known tracks which have stood on their own separate from the film, the bass heavy, treble conscious “Pusherman,” the clavinet crawling “Freddie’s Dead” and the title track, which stands as almost the archetype anthem for the entire blaxploitation movement. Instrumentals and other equally sure footed tracks round out the collection. A must.
