Usually when characters die on an animated comedy series, they’re back and perfectly fine by the next episode. But sometimes an animated series kills off a character permanently, whether it be because the actor who voices the character has to leave the show, there’s a dispute between actor and producers, or maybe because the show’s makers just don’t like that character anymore.
The last time The Simpsons killed off a character—or “did it,” as some like to say—was back in the year 2000 when Ned Flanders’ wife Maude fell to her death. Now executive producer Al Jean has revealed that another character will soon meet their demise.
Speaking to reporters recently, Jean said:
“We’re actually working on a script where a character will pass away. I’ll give a clue that the actor playing the character won an Emmy for playing that character, but I won’t say who it is.”
That’s not much to go on at all, as the L.A. Times’ Show Tracker points out:
Nearly every member of the core ensemble of voice-over performers has won an Emmy, including
Dan Castellaneta (Homer, Barney, Krusty), Julie Kavner (Marge, Patty, Selma),
Hank Azaria (Apu, practically everyone else on the show),
Nancy Cartwright (Bart) and
Yeardley Smith (Lisa).
Even a few guest stars have picked up Emmys for “Simpsons” appearances, including Anne Hathaway for voicing Princess Penelope and Kelsey Grammer for Sideshow Bob.
So what do you think, Simpsons fans? Who’s going to get the next permanent curtain call?
Snake Jailbird, Sideshow Bob, Comic Book Guy, Jackie Bouvier or Hyman Krustofsky.
