NYCC 2015 Minority Report Panel

The stars of TV’s Minority Report appearance today New York Comic-Con, where FOX screened the newest episode to the audience in attendance. Moderated by Sandra Gonzalez, the panel included showrunner Max Borenstein, and stars Stark Sands, Meagan Good, Wilmer Valderrama, Laura Regan, Nick Zano, Li Jun Li, and Daniel London.

Below are some highlights from the panel’s Q&A after the screening. We’ll have a full review of the episode, where Vega finds out part of the mystery of her father’s murder, soon (episode 1.5 “The Present,” which premieres October 19, 2015).

Q: How will Arthur fit into this?
Zano: He has a lot of heart. He is very familiar to her struggle.
Goode: He’s got a soft spot.
Regan: She and Lara Vega butt heads, but will find a way to work together.

Q: This episode introduced a terror threat. How are those going to be incorporated?
Valderrama: This is leading up to what our show is about. Where we can all be as a unit. My character’s nature is to get the job done within the laws, within the rules. What’s really unique is he’s gonna have to make tough decisions based on if we are really gonna do this. I’m only gonna be able to do it with my ex-partner and welcome her into the Hawk-Eye system. Blake is gonna have to make some compromises. Next couple of episodes are very fast–paced, very explosive. A big conspiracy is about to happen.

Q: What is your favorite Easter egg of the future?
Jun Li: Simpsons
London: Baked goods
Regan: The island that used to not be an island because of global warming.
Zano: Brand of pot.
Valderrama: Simpsons
Goode: I like that Beyonce is still around. And they say she’s a classic. I’m not mad at the selfie drone because I’m really bad at selfies.
Sands: Reference to The West Wing.
Bornstein: Stark just stole mine. Turns out it’s the same fictional universe as The West Wing. You can quote me on that.

Q: Meagan Good and Wilmer Valderrama, how do both of you tie back to your cultural roots in the show?
Goode: I think the best thing is being authentic to who you are. That’s what I try to bring to the character. The cast is multidiverse. It’s a melting pot but it’s very colorless, too.
Valderrama: We’ve been waiting a very long time for television to mirror what America looks like. We had Desi Arnez and Ricky Ricardo and then went backwards. Gotta give Max [Borenstein] and Steven Spielberg for painting a future that mirrors the present day. Minorities are soon to be the majority. It’s beautiful to see the leading characters as examples.

Q: Do you guys think that future deeds can wipe away past deeds?
Good: Absolutely. It’s about what you do to make it right. Being accountable. Redemption is always possible. God forgives us.
Regan: It carries from the film – free will.

Q: Stark, Nick, Laura. How does it feel to play siblings?
Regan: It’s easy to bond when you are all in skin tight suits in a bathtub. We’re all laying there. We’re here – in Spielberg’s world. We made up a precog musical.

Sands: [Singing] Lying in a milk bath. Living in a milk bath.
Zano: That took us 7 months to write.

Valderama: I just want to say, thanks for supporting us The next couple of episodes are going to be incredible. From here on out, the road gets really exciting. Tell your friends. Thank you for celebrating the show with us.

Episode 1.5 “The Present” Official Synopsis

The future is coming. Based on the international blockbuster film by executive producer Steven Spielberg and the first of his films to be adapted for television, MINORITY REPORT follows the unlikely partnership between a man haunted by the future and a cop haunted by her past, as they race to stop the worst crimes of the year 2065 before they happen. Set in Washington, D.C., it is 10 years after the demise of Precrime, a law enforcement agency tasked with identifying and eliminating criminals… before their crimes were committed. To carry out this brand of justice, the agency used three precogs – “precognitives” Dash, Arthur and Agatha – who were able to see the future. Now, in 2065, crime-solving is different, and justice leans more on sophisticated and trusted technology than on the instincts of the precogs. Precog DASH (Stark Sands, “Inside Llewyn Davis”) – driven by his terrifying, but fragmented visions – now has returned in secret to help a brash, but shrewd police detective, LARA VEGA (Meagan Good, “Think Like A Man” franchise, “Californication”), attempt to stop the murders that he predicts. As they navigate this future America, they will search for Dash’s missing twin brother, ARTHUR, and elude others who will stop at nothing to exploit their precog abilities. Also complicating matters is Dash and Arthur’s ingenious, but reclusive, foster sister, AGATHA (Laura Regan, “Mad Men,” “Unbreakable”), who just wants Dash to return home. A drama of crime and conspiracy, this is a timeless story of connection: two lost souls, Dash and Vega, who find friendship, purpose and redemption in each other.
