Universal has released the first trailer for The Huntsman: Winter’s War starring Chris Hemsworth as the title character. In the film, Freya the Ice Queen (Emily Blunt) summons her greatest warriors to retrieve the all-powerful mirror that could revive her older sister, Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron). Jessica Chastain also stars as Sara, The Warrior, who will aide Eric, The Huntsman, in stopping Freya and Ravenna from carrying out their evil plan. Nick Frost also stars.

Well it’s nice to see that the more marketable Chris Hemsworth is taking the lead on this one as opposed to making this a sequel about Snow White (previously played by Kristen Stewart in Snow White and the Huntsman). Hemsworth, star of films like Thor, Avengers, Rush, and the upcoming Heart of the Sea, has a much more charismatic presence than Stewart, even if the film was a darker version of the Snow White story we are accustomed to seeing.
Not that this sequel has lost that. Based on the trailer, we are going to be inundated with a whole lot of visuals. Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for his work on Snow White and the Huntsman, makes his directorial debut in the sequel. Given the director’s background, it’s not completely surprising that we are seeing so many visual effects in this one trailer.
While films that overly use these CGI-created worlds is a cause for concern, the cast of Hemsworth, Chastain, Blunt, Theron, and Frost makes The Huntsman worth watching at least once. And of course if it can manage to surprise us, maybe even multiple viewings.
The Huntsman: Winter’s War hits theaters on April 22, 2015.
Here’s the plot synopsis.
The fantastical world of Snow White and the Huntsman expands to reveal how the fates of The Huntsman Eric and Queen Ravenna are deeply and dangerously intertwined. Chris Hemsworth and Oscar® winner Charlize Theron return to their roles in The Huntsman Winter’s War, an epic action-adventure in which they are joined by Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain, as well as director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan. Producer Joe Roth (Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland) once again leads the team in a breathtaking new tale nested in the legendary saga.
Long before the evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) was thought vanquished by Snow White’s blade, she watched silently as her sister, Freya (Blunt), suffered a heartbreaking betrayal and fled their kingdom. With Freya’s ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen””including Eric (Hemsworth) and warrior Sara (Chastain)””only to find that her prized two defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love.
When Freya learns of her sister’s demise, she summons her remaining soldiers to bring the Magic Mirror home to the only sorceress left who can harness its power. But once she discovers Ravenna can be resurrected from its golden depths, the wicked sisters threaten this enchanted land with twice the darkest force it’s ever seen. Now, their amassing army shall prove undefeatable”¦unless the banished huntsmen who broke their queen’s cardinal rule can fight their way back to one another.
