For those of us who can claim to be children of the 80’s, and those who were “children stuck in an adult’s body” in the 80’s, the Terminator franchise was a beloved friend. It nurtured us as we were told to sit down in front of the TV while our parents did goodness knows what, and it provided us with a wonderful mix of science fiction and explosive action. It was, in short, the 80’s wrapped up into a film (one without Kevin Bacon).
But now, without James Cameron at the helm, it turns out that the Terminator franchise is headed towards an early grave. Some may already note that it has been buried since Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines 2003 release. But that movie didn’t suck too badly, and TV’s The Sarah Connor Chronicles have made up for it a little bit.
Sadly, the end is nigh, if the latest spoiler is to be believed. We’ve held off covering this because it was, at first, just a very large and messy rumor. However, now, after AICN’s Moriarty broke the news, and CHUD’s Devin Faraci added his confirmation of it being an actual spoiler, we feel we can safely say, Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins will be the end of a beloved childhood friend. It’s like they’re killing Bambi all over again.
Below is the center of our attention, the original rumor from AICN’s inside-person.
BEWARE, MASSIVE SPOILER ALERT BELOW!!!
“Alright so the main character is a cyborg named Marcus. For some background, Marcus was a criminal who was executed in 2003. He donated his body to Project Angel which was involved with SkyNet. They take his body and make a terminator out of him so he’s a terminator skeleton but has living muscle/skin and a beating heart too. At the end of the movie John Connor is fighting a T800 model 101 and loses. He dies and the top resistance people come up with a plan to help the resistance keep fighting on. The resistance feels that it’s important to keep the image or idea that John Connor is still alive so the resistance keeps going. So they rip off Marcus’ skin and put John Connor’s on the skeleton so now Marcus is John Connor.”
How do you screw a beloved franchise in one easy step? That’s how!
Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, which is scheduled to be released on May 22, 2009, is directed by McG and stars Christian Bale, Anton Yelchin, and Sam Worthington.
Damn you McG!
Speaking on the official movie’s official blog, director McG has, possibly, cryptically debunked this rumor, though without actually referring to at all. All he says is “By the way, there are only three people who know the ending.” Check out the link for the full blog post, and for information on the movie.
At first I thought this sounded promising, but I read this earlier and I have to say– no just stop it before you ruin the the whole thing.

McG. The guy’s name is McG. I find it hard to take him seriously. And yes, this movie is going to suck.
