It’s been a long while since a new Christmas special aired on TV and became a classic along side Rudolph, Frosty and The Grinch. Now there’s a chance that a new one may be on the way. The only thing is, this one sounds a tad… different.
This coming holiday season will include Gotta Catch Santa, a new special being aired on one of the major networks that’s being called a “Rankin-Bass-esque” project. The special will apparently be animated and even delve into the naturally cheerful world of quantum physics and how jolly St. Nick (voiced by William Shatner) is able to pull off his miraculous one night gift run among other logical question marks. Some children try and win a contest by getting the elusive proof of Santa’s existence via photograph, but eventually have to team up with him to defeat a threat to the world we live in that’s described as “Frosty meets Cthulhu.”
Writing and directing this unique new Christmas tale is veteran writer Steven de Souza, whose credits include the screenplay for the first two Die Hard films, 48 Hours, and Beverly Hills Cop III. De Souza posed a question about the set up for Gotta Catch Santa in an effort to explain the movie’s premise …
You know the emails you always get around Christmas that explain why Santa Claus can’t really exist – not because there’s no such thing as Santa Claus – but because in order to carry that payload of toys on re-entry, the reindeers would burn up. And then there’s a formula that proves this. Or other messages say that the problem isn’t re-entry, but launch, and there’s a formula about the energy a healthy male reindeer would be able to produce?
And answered here’s his answer …
Well, we start with a bunch of brainy kids kicking this idea around, and they stumble upon the actual method Santa uses – which involves quantum mechanics and a lot of dialogue that only William Shatner can say, and by attempting to get a photograph of Santa in order to win a contest or to prove his existence, they say, “˜We’ll just delay him for 10 seconds when he’s at our chimney’.
Certainly sounds interesting. Looks like we won’t have long to wait before seeing if this does indeed become a new Christmas classic or if it’s easily forgotten.

Shatner is just a really cool dude.

Sounds like it will rank up there with Santa Claus Conquers the Marshians from the 60’s.
