In a recent interview with GameDaily, Hollywood producer Adrian Askarieh talked video game movies in great detail. On the list, he spoke on big projects like Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, Hitman 2, and Just Cause — all of which have movies in the works.
From the very second that a Kane & Lynch movie was announced, superstar Bruce Willis was rumored to be up for one of the starring roles. It’s been a long time since these rumors started swirling, but staying nice and chaos free, Askarieh confirmed in this interview that Willis is indeed attached and confirmed for the movie, and that he will be playing Kane (the one on the left) of the duo.
He also confirmed that the movie will be directed by Simon Crane, who is mostly known for his stunt work, but who has also done a lot of Second Unit Directing and Assistant Directing. It will finally begin production in March of 2010, which is still a long ways off, but considering this thing has been coming for years now, it’s good to have an actual date. Lionsgate will be handling the distribution, and Millennium is financing it.
When asked if the movie would follow the story of the game, this is what Askarieh had to say:
Well, it’s going to have the basic premise. But the details for the movie are going to be different. It’s not going to have every sequence from the game, but it’s essentially the story of a mercenary teaming up with a schizophrenic psychopath to save his wife and daughter.
As with every video game based movie, many will wonder if this is even remotely worth being excited about. Even when the game is one of the greatest ever made, the movies still find a way to suck pretty efficiently, so when a game like Kane & Lynch — which wasn’t very well-received — has a movie coming, it’s going to raise an eyebrow. But if this movie has anything going for it, it’s that the script is actually being enjoyed by those who read it. In the interview, it was even revealed that Bruce Willis called it “one of the best action scripts he’s ever read,” even before signing on to the movie.
Whether Willis actually said this or if it’s candy-coated quoting is beyond me, but it’s enough to make me curious what they’ll come up with. I’ve personally never played the game, but will be soon to see for myself.
