The comic world lost an amazing artist and friend on Monday with the passing of Minck Oosterveer, who tragically died in a motorcycle accident. Oosterveer was the artist on two books from BOOM! Studios: The Unknown and The Unknown: Devil Made Flesh (both series written by former BOOM! Editor-in-Chief Mark Waid). To honor the life and work of Oosterveer, BOOM is offering both series as free downloads though all of their digital partners.
If you go to comiXology, iVerse, Graphicly, or mydigitalcomics, you can pick up both of these series yourself.
BOOM’s current Editor-in-Chief, Matt Gagnon, has also posted a tribute to the artist on BOOM’s webpage, which you can read for yourself here.
As a Dutch artist, with only a few pieces of work released in the United States, Oosterveer is probably not a name many U.S. fans are familiar with, but it is evident that many in the comics community, and particularly those who worked with him at BOOM!, have been moved and saddened by his passing. Oosterveer has had a long career in Europe and was just starting to get more work in the United States. Hopefully, we may be able to see more of his past work brought over to the States. In the meantime, I think this is a great tribute to a man who has left us too early so give these titles a chance and help honor a great artist in the way he would hopefully most prefer, by enjoying his work.
