In one of the more unexpected announcements, it’s been revealed that Stephen Colbert, the host of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, will have a cameo at some point in director Peter Jackson‘s upcoming trilogy adaptation of The Hobbit.
Colbert is a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings and J.R.R. Tolkien’s work as a whole, and he was even invited to the set in New Zealand to visit and check out 25 minutes from the movie. It appears this visit is what turned into the cameo appearance.
There is no word yet who Colbert will be playing or how visible it will be. It could be a microscopic role, similar to the random glimpses of Peter Jackson we’ve seen from time to time, or maybe it’ll be a little larger with a line or two. Perhaps it will be along the same lines as Billy Crystal’s Miracle Max in The Princess Bride. Who knows!
The only thing that is known is that his came won’t be part of the first movie in the trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which hits theaters on December 14th. That leaves either The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug on December 13, 2013, or The Hobbit: There and Back Again on July 18, 2014.
What do you think about Stephen Colbert making a cameo in The Hobbit?
