IDW has released a new World War II era comic series with Half Past Danger #1. Created by Stephen Mooney, this adventure story has everything you’d want from an alternate history wartime epic: mystery, barroom brawls, Indiana Jones-esque heroes, femme fatales and dinosaurs!

It’s 1943 and Staff Sergeant Thomas Michael Flynn is on a routine mission with his squad on a Japanese island in the South Pacific. When they begin to notice peculiar occurrences such as Nazi campsites and dinosaurs running amok, everything Flynn thought he knew about the war collapses. Two months later, Flynn is back in the United States. Sitting alone at a bar in New York, Flynn is approached by a massive, blonde haired British soldier named Captain John Noble and a striking, enigmatic woman addressing herself as Agent Huntington-Moss of British Intelligence, but he drunkenly brushes them off. What happens next will be the start of Flynn’s journey into the unknown.

What an entertaining comic! In just 26 pages, Mooney drops you off into the depths of World War II in a far off land, brings you back to New York and sets up a slew of events that will be sure to have lasting and dangerous effects should this series have a long run. His characters are also each distinctive and somewhat mystifying.

Let’s not forget about Mooney’s illustrations. Various shades of green, brown and yellow bring forth a prevalent wartime feel. The action and movement of characters is perfectly timed, offering a beautiful harmony with the dialogue and story.

I really hope that Half Past Danger becomes a successful series. It’s a wild romp and deserves to be told in completion. This is entertainment at its best!
